What’s Going On, Africa? WhatsApp Admins in Zambia Could Be Required to Register Groups or Be Arrested.

It’s 3:52 pm and I currently have this expression on my face:

#NoJokes.

First, it was Uganda with their N20 per day to use social media. Next, we read that Tanzanian bloggers would have to pay $900/ year to operate.

Now, in Zambia, there is a speculation that WhatsApp group administrators in the country would have to register the groups and set up codes of ethics or risk being arrested if there is a breach. This was hinted at by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology (ZICTA) boss Mofyta Chisala. In his words:

“We are coming up with a law where now every administrator must be registered so that he can put ethics or codes of conduct for anyone who is going to be on that blog because at the end of the day, we are going to arrest that person who created the WhatsApp group or the editor or coordinator of the blog and that should not be the end game.

However,  ZICTA director general Patrick Mutimushi said there were no such plans ‘at the moment.’

The registration of Whatsapp Admins isn’t an African thing, though, a similar law currently exists in India and in April, the Indian Police arrested Whatsapp admins for sharing child pornography.

So, over to you, do you think this is this an overreach of government authority or a necessary measure to maintain order?
