The Met Gala isn’t a competition and there is no prize for best dressed at “the party of the year”, but if there was Rihanna would be taking home the crown again this year! She nailed the theme and looked stunning in 2015, was absent last year, and came back with a bang this year in a Comme des Garçons’ deconstructed, pink petals.
The theme of 2017’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit gala, which raises money for the Costume Institute, was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, honouring the legendary designer behind cutting age label Commes Des Garçons.
The classic CDG aesthetic tends to overblown silhouettes, almost unwearable pieces, and shapes that are not particularly flattering so at the very least we were expecting rather avant garde looks from the stars who would be taking to the red carpet but sorry to say, very few were brave enough to try, and really only Rihanna actually pulled it off.
Honourable mentions go to Tracee Ellis Ross for her blue CG look and Solange who chose Thom Brown but was in the right spirit.
Co-chair, Pharrell opted for Comme des Garçons jeans worn with flannel and a studded leather jacket while Helen Lasichanh committed in a Comme des Garçons look from Rei Kawakubo’s Fall 2017 collection.
There were still far too many sheer and “illusion” dresses (Kylie Jenner and Halle Berry both in Atelier Versace ) and cutout details – models Kendall Jenner in La Perla couture and Lily Aldrige in Balenciaga.
Others simply beget the question What were they thinking? like Kim K West, and then there are those who just didn’t even try – Selena Gomez and The Weekend
All in all, not a great showing but I’d like to believe that no one would have come close to pulling anything off with as much aplomb as Rihanna in any case!
