Health is wealth. You’d be surprised to know what detoxifying your body can to you. Wondering why you’ve been feeling sluggish or out of sync, struggling with skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems and can’t seem to lose weight? That’s your body telling you it needs a detox. A proper detox can help you achieve amazing health benefits and should be incorporated into your lifestyle regime. The aim of detoxification is to remove all the negative effect of substances in your system so as to keep your body in peak condition.
I like food a lot especially junk food, so once in a while I like to give my body a break from all the toxins and flush my system. And I suggest you detox also, at least once in a while.
How do you start a detox?
First, reduce your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Then decide the type of detox program that is right for you. There are many detoxification programs and detox recipes, depending on your individual needs.
Many programs follow a 7-day schedule because it usually takes the body time to clean the blood. I recommend intermittent fasting (you can read about that here) on liquids for two days, followed by a carefully-planned five-day detox diet to allow your digestive system to rest. Some people do a 3-7 day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water), it actually depends on what works for you. So make sure you do your research and find out what works for you before you start a detox program..
After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily with these diet, supplements and lifestyle practices. These are some of the things I do during the time I am not on a detox; it just generally increases your health:
1. Cut your sugar intake
When you consume more sugar, your body asks for more insulin, which stains your pancreas and thereby wearing you out. In the long run, this can cause diseases like diabetes, cancer and even increase your weight. So taking some time off and cutting back on the amount of sugar you consume, helps detox your body system and allows it to rejuvenate and also peed up your metabolism.
2. Drink a lot of water.
Water should be your best friend. It is the most valuable tool for detoxifying your body. Most of the functions in your body require water. You need to always stay hydrated, because it will help the flow of waste out of your body, and that is what the detox is all about. So the more water you take the more waste you eliminate and the healthier you’ll be.
3. Drink tea
Don’t be scared, it isn’t a must you drink hot tea, you can always substitute it with ice tea (make it yourself). Tea is full of antioxidants and it hydrates and fills you up, making you less hungry. It also helps to decrease the build-up of toxins already in your tissues. Avoid detoxing teas as they usually come with side effects. I used one that gave me headaches. I recommend you take any brand of green tea instead.
Have you done a detox of any kind? I’d love to hear about your experience and insights.
