Lagos has a fair share of Chinese Restaurants and a few of them have history dating back a couple of decades. This is obviously not surprising given the relative large presence of Chinese people in Lagos as well as the amount of trade Nigeria does with China.
Whether you’re in the mood for the traditional spicy hotpot, the famous Peking duck or delicious Dim Sum, this guide will help you navigate the best restaurants Lagos has to offer in terms of Chinese cuisine.
We cover everything from hole-in-the-wall hotpot joints to fine dining establishments. Let’s get those chopsticks clicking!
Zhou Jie Hot Pot, Victoria Island
42 Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island
Hot pot (also called steam boat) works like this: you choose a type of soup (spicy or normal), pick vegetables (usually unlimited refill) and meat (chicken, pork, beef, lamb, seafood)—cook everything in a hot plate embedded on the table. Eat when ready, it is as simple as that. Think of it as pepper soup with a few extra veggies. Zhou Jie Hot Pot has perfected the art right here in Lagos. Two things to keeps in mind, there isn’t much in the way of decor or ambiance and the menu is all in Chinese. Good luck!
Zen Garden (also Jade Garden)
60 Isaac John Street, Ikeja, Lagos
Zen Garden is a sister restaurant of Pearl Garden in Victoria Island. This restaurant is located on Isaac John Street in GRA, Ikeja. It’s the perfect space for any sort of group gathering – a bridal shower, a birthday party or just chill for two. Zen Garden has an extensive authentic menu and the steamed pork dumplings is highly recommended.
Eko Hotel, 1415 Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island
Red Chinese is a relatively new addition to the collection of restaurants at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island. The impressive view of the ocean, tasteful decor and authentic Chinese makes it a great place to catch up with old friends and family in Lagos. You must try their crispy fried duck.
Zenith Water Margin
28 Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere
Zenith Water Margin was one of Lagos’ first Chinese restaurants with history dating back to 1980s. Chinese restaurants in Lagos come and go, yet Zenith Water Margin remains a constant fixture. Zenith Water Margin went through an extensive renovation in 2013 to modernize the decor and upgrade the facility. It is a great spot for a romantic date on the Mainland if you can get parking.
10A Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island
Pearl Garden is located near Eko Hotel in Victoria Island and tends to fill up quickly, as a result it is highly recommended to make a reservation especially for the private room areas. The decor is relatively modern with Asian influences. It is a great location to have business lunch or entertain guests from out of town who crave authentic Chinese
Sunrise Chinese Restaurant
32 Aromire Avenue, Ikeja
Sunrise Chinese is not exactly a hole-in-the-wall restaurant however it’s understated. That’s part of the charm. The Chinese food here is authentic and tastes great—that’s it. If you are looking for ambience or an electrifying atmosphere, give this place a miss.
Lihao Chinese Cuisine
Thorborn Avenue, Opp Ozone Cinema, Yaba
Yaba is now uber cool – that’s where the start-up kids hang out. That was probably the thesis behind the opening Lihao Chinese Cuisine just opposite the E-Center in Yaba back in 2013. Lihao serves excellent dumplings and that’s reason enough to visit. The menu matching exercise can be tedious.
Soho Chinese Restaurant
Intercontinental Hotel, 52 Kofo Abayomi street, Victoria Island
The award winning Chef Chua Kong from Malaysia was brought on board to revolutionise the menu at Soho Restaurant. The initial signs are very positive. The menu has evolved into a modern Chinese fusion — hence the reason why Soho is often mistaken to be a generic Asian Restaurant. A trip to Soho will leave your wallet considerably lighter.
Golden Gate Chinese
Alfred Rewane Road, Ikoyi
Golden Gate Restaurant has been around for a while and is still a trusted go-to for family dinners and group gatherings. The decor is a little dated but the chefs have shown their consistency at excellent Chinese cuisine for the years.
126 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi
If Mr Chang feels like you a visiting a Chinese family at home, it was deliberate – nothing wrong with that. Mr. Chang specializes in colourful and spicy Chinese dishes in Lagos. With very traditional mahogany wooden chairs dotted around circular tables, this Mr Chang is ideal for smaller groups and intimate dates. The only draw-back is that parking is very limited.
New China Restaurant, Ikeja
Opic Plaza, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja
This gem is tucked away in the basement of the Opic Plaza and within walking distance of the Sheraton hotel. New China Restaurant is Ikeja’s slightly more traditional which is reflected in its very Chinese decor. However, the main attraction at New China Restaurant is consistently good food which is pocket friendly.
Jade Palace Chinese Cuisine, Victoria Island
61 Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island
Jade Palace is where you come to get authentic Cantonese cuisine. The palace is run by a family from Hong Kong and the head chef is from Guangdong in China. Ask the friendly servers to order off the daily “secret” menu. Otherwise, the English menu is still a safe bet. For some reason, Dim Sum is not a big thing in Lagos. The best Dim Sum can be found in Jade Palace, look no further.
Oriental Garden, Victoria Island
Oriental Hotel, 3 Lekki-Epe Express Way, Lekki Phase 1
This is a very Chinese popular restaurant located on the third floor of the Lagos Oriental Hotel and has a gorgeous view of the lagoon. Like its Sister restaurant, Mayumi, the decor is impressive and tastefully done. Oriental garden is recommended for large groups of diners.
Airport Hotel Chinese Restaurant
111 Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ikeja
The great thing about restaurants in Lagos is that there quite a few gems to uncover if you look hard enough. Airport Hotel Chinese Restaurant is a good example – located in Ikeja and probably serves the best Guangzhou cuisine in Lagos. Fun fact: Guangzhou is the birthplace of the world famous Cantonese cuisine.
