IIhan Omar was born In 1982 to a Somalian dad and a Yemeni mom who died shortly after she was born.
Her Family left Somalia in 1991 when the civil war broke out in Somalia.They spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before they eventually moved to the US in 1995.
Omar first stepped foot in the US as a refugee and has worked her way up and has created a name for herself, Somali American hero family and her Somali-American

If you have been to any refugee camp or a Camp for internally displaced people, you will understand what it cost her to let go of her past and focus on tomorrow.
Four years in that camp is enough to tear down her self-esteem and destroy her self-worth and make her loose her identity. She didn’t let all those define her or determine her choices.
